GDPR, what we are doing, and why it is important to us!

With a rapid change in technology there has been a major lag in the laws developed to regulate it. The European Union is taking action to address these changes to protect personal data and privacy on the internet. This new regulation is called GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and it will apply to residents of the European Union, as well as the companies that are based in or do business in any of the member countries. It is the most significant piece of European data protection legislation to be introduced in 20 years and is effective May 25th, 2018. It will significantly enhance protection of personal data for people in the EU and increase the obligations of organizations who collect or process personal data.

Some of the key changes in the GDPR are to improve the transparency of personal data processing methods part of this is emphasizing consent by design. An example of this could be improving the transparency of website forms and ensure there is a clear opt-in to any email marketing. The individual now has the right to know what data about them is being processed and how. People can request that their data to be completely removed from a company's system or have it corrected.

Disclaimer: This article is not to be used as legal advice. It is only intended for a general overview of the GDPR and to inform readers of our privacy policy update.

3megawatt takes compliance with the GDPR very seriously so we have been working on updating our privacy policy. We have also been making changes to our product and website to ensure compliance ahead of the May 25th deadline. We believe this is an opportunity to continue to build trust with our clients and anyone interested in our product. It is also an opportunity for continuous improvement in data privacy and security, which is always a plus! We have developed this policy in order for you to understand how 3megawatt collects, uses and discloses personal information. The following is a quick overview of what 3megawatt is doing to comply with the new regulations for both visitors of our website and current users of our product.

What we are doing...

3megawatt provides software as a service to businesses in the energy industry giving us lots of experience handling sensitive information. We maintain high company wide privacy standards for data processing and ensure high security of the data clients store on BluePoint. The privacy and security of personal data is just as important to us. We have made extensive preparations for the new GDPR regulations by double and triple checking all of our current processes to ensure we are making the necessary changes to remain compliant. Applying this globally was a pretty easy decision for us. The new data handling procedures required by the GDPR will apply to all of 3megawatt's contacts. We believe that everyone should benefit!

We have already adjusted our website forms to explain exactly what your personal information is being used for because we want you to feel confident in our services right from the start. Many of the forms on our website help us understand how and if our service can benefit you. It allows us to understand your needs a little more and create a better experience for those of you interested in our product. Forms will now require you to read our privacy statement and we let you know how we will use your contact information. If you ever want to know how you opted-in to any 3megawatt email marketing or news we can now verify this (starting May 14th). As always it is very easy to opt-out of any emails that you receive from us. The footer of all emails will allow you to easily opt-out, update your preferences, and personal information whenever you want! We only store your data in places that comply with new regulations and would never sell or disclose this information to other companies.

Another exciting change will be the new cookie banner we are creating (available May 14th). Cookies are small files used for tracking analytics and other preferences while you browse. The banner will allow visitors to opt-in or out of any cookies used on our website. You can even revoke your choice by simply adjusting your settings. Although, we encourage visitors to continue to use cookies because they will significantly improve your browsing experience!

We’ve also appointed a Data Protection Officer to process any of your privacy related inquiries and help us maintain a high company wide standard of privacy and security. The Data Protection Officer can be contacted at any time for information regarding our policy and any other questions that you have. We will continue re-evaluate this policy based on changes in law and to ensure that it fits your needs. Feedback is always welcome.

Changes in BluePoint

As mentioned above, we will be applying these changes to our product. We want to ensure that 3megawatt clients are aware of these changes and how they will benefit. We will notify BluePoint users in a timely manner to ensure that everyone is up-to-date. Users will fully understand how their personal data is being processed right from the start. We will also inform new users about any email communication they should expect after signing up to BluePoint for the purpose of making their on-boarding experience easier and keeping them updated on the product. Please contact our Data Protection Officer for more information and stay tuned for more updates!
