BluePoint Introduces Hydropower Plant Management Software
New capabilities for hydro plant management
What is hydro asset management?
Hydropower is the most important and widely-used renewable source of energy. Hydropower represents about 17% of total electricity production. Particularly run-of-the-river or ROR hydroelectricity is a popular type of hydroelectric generation investment for infrastructure funds.
Run-of-the-river hydroelectricity is a type of hydroelectric generation whereby the natural flow and elevation drop of a river are used to generate electricity. Power stations of this type are installed on rivers with a consistent and steady flow, either natural or through the use of a large reservoir at the head of the river.
15 years ago it was common to find O&M and asset management teams at the physical hydro generation facilities. Today, most of the hydro plants (other than the very large ones), are mostly managed remotely. This requires a significant change in organization structure, processes and tools.
Why did 3megawatt develop capabilities for hydro asset management?
3megawatt’s clients include infrastructure funds and alternative asset investors who increasingly invest in a mix of various renewable energy sources. These investors expect to see all the financial and technical performance of their renewable investment portfolio information in one central place. With BluePoint, investors are now able track performance for solar PV, wind, biomass, biogas, grid connected storage assets and hydro from one central dashboard.
What hydro plant capabilities did we add?
This meant that we needed to add hydro specific KPIs to our BluePoint software solution including the actual and synthetic river flow. In addition, BluePoint can be used to calculate water rents and royalties and track these expenses against investor or bank budgets, either per plant or on a consolidated portfolio level.
BluePoint is currently used by international infrastructure funds and independent power producers to manage 300MW of hydro plants worldwide.
